%20in%20the%20bone%20marrow.%22,%22articleBody%22:%22Hypereosinophilic%20Syndrome%20in%20Dogs%20Hypereosinophilic%20syndrome%20is%20a%20disorder%20of%20unknown%20cause,%20characterized%20by%20persistent%20eosinophilia%20--%20sustained%20overproduction%20of%20eosinophils%20(white%20blood%20cells%20of%20the%20immune%20system)%20in%20the%20bone%20marrow.%20However,%20its%20suspected%20cause%20is%20a%20link%20to%20a%20severe%20reaction%20to%20an%20unidentified%20antigen,%20or%20impairment%20of%20the%20immune%20response%20and%20control%20of%20eosinophil%20production.%20This%20is%20a%20multi-system%20syndrome,%20with%20invasion%20of%20the%20tissues%20by%20eosinophils%20and%20subsequent%20organ%20damage%20and%20dysfunction.%20It%20frequently%20has%20a%20fatal%20outcome.%20Organ%20damage%20can%20result%20from%20the%20effects%20of%20eosinophil%20granule%20products%20and%20eosinophil-derived%20cytokines,%20a%20category%20of%20regulatory%20proteins%20that%20are%20released%20by%20cells%20in%20the%20immune%20system%20into%20the%20tissues.%20Common%20sites%20of%20infiltration%20include%20the%20gastrointestinal%20tract%20(especially%20the%20intestine%20and%20liver),%20spleen,%20bone%20marrow,%20lungs,%20and%20lymph%20nodes%20(especially%20those%20in%20the%20abdominal%20area).%20Less%20common%20sites%20of%20infiltration%20include%20the%20skin,%20kidney,%20heart,%20thyroid,%20adrenal%20glands%20and%20pancreas.%20This%20condition%20is%20rare%20in%20dogs,%20but%20Rottweilers%20may%20be%20predisposed.%20Symptoms%20Lethargy%20Fever%20Loss%20of%20appetite%20(anorexia)%20Intermittent%20vomiting%20and%20diarrhea%20Weight%20loss%20Emaciation%20Enlargement%20of%20the%20liver%20and%20spleen%20Thickened%20(diffuse%20or%20segmental)%20intestine%20that%20is%20non-painful%20Abdominal%20masses%20Itching%20and%20seizures%20(less%20frequently)%20Mesenteric%20and%20possibly%20peripheral%20lymphadenopathy%20(swollen%20lymph%20nodes%20in%20the%20abdominal%20region%20or%20other%20areas%20of%20the%20body)%20Mass%20lesions%20caused%20by%20eosinophilic%20granulomatous%20(inflamed%20masses%20of%20tissue)%20involving%20the%20lymph%20nodes%20and%5C/or%20organsCauses%20The%20cause%20of%20hypereosinophilic%20syndrome%20is%20unknown.%20However,%20it%20is%20believed%20to%20be%20cause%20by%20a%20severe%20reaction%20to%20an%20underlying,%20as%20yet%20unidentifiable%20antigenic%20stimulus%20that%20may%20be%20composed%20of%20two%20different%20strains%20of%20a%20virus.%20Diagnosis%20The%20veterinary%20examination%20will%20consist%20of%20standard%20laboratory%20work,%20including%20a%20complete%20blood%20profile,%20chemical%20blood%20profile,%20a%20complete%20blood%20count,%20and%20a%20urinalysis.%20You%20will%20need%20to%20give%20a%20thorough%20history%20of%20your%20dog's%20health%20and%20onset%20of%20symptoms.%20Additional%20diagnostics%20will%20include%20a%20bone%20marrow%20aspiration%20and%5C/or%20core%20biopsy%20of%20the%20cells,%20and%20a%20biopsy%20of%20the%20affected%20organ%20or%20mass.%20It%20is%20typical%20for%20the%20blood%20test%20results%20to%20show%20increased%20amounts%20of%20multiple%20types%20of%20white%20blood%20cells,%20most%20notably%20leukocytosis%20(leukocyte),%20basophilia%20(basophil),%20and%20eosinophilia%20(eosinophil).%20The%20results%20of%20the%20blood%20tests%20may%20also%20show%20anemic%20conditions,%20and%20the%20biochemical%20profile%20may%20show%20abnormalities%20in%20the%20case%20of%20organ%20dysfunction.%20Diagnostic%20imaging%20can%20be%20helpful%20in%20determining%20the%20extent%20of%20organ%20damage%20as%20well.%20Radiographic%20contrast,%20which%20uses%20an%20injection%20of%20a%20radiocontrasting%20agent%20into%20the%20area%20to%20be%20viewed,%20may%20be%20used%20to%20improve%20visibility%20of%20the%20internal%20organs.%20These%20X-rays%20may%20show%20thickened%20intestines%20and%20abnormalities%20in%20the%20lining%20of%20the%20intestines.%20Other%20findings%20may%20be%20reactive%20hyperplasia%20(abnormal%20enlargement)%20of%20the%20lymph%20nodes%20due%20to%20eosinophil%20infiltration,%20and%20fibrosis%20(excess%20fibrous%20connective%20tissue)%20and%20thrombosis%20(coagulation%20in%20the%20arteries)%20surrounding%20the%20heart.%20Treatment%20Long-term%20maintenance%20therapy%20will%20be%20employed%20to%20control%20or%20reduce%20the%20eosinophilia%20and%20organ%20damage.%20High%20serum%20immunoglobulin%20concentrations%20(the%20fraction%20of%20the%20blood%20serum%20that%20contains%20antibodies)%20can%20signify%20a%20good%20response%20to%20treatment%20with%20prednisone,%20a%20corticosteroid%20given%20to%20reduce%20inflammation,%20and%20therefore%20a%20better%20prognosis.%20Prednisone%20can%20be%20effective%20at%20suppressing%20eosinophil%20production.%20In%20some%20cases,%20chemotherapy%20may%20be%20appropriate%20for%20inhibiting%20DNA%20synthesis,%20in%20effect,%20reducing%20the%20reproduction%20of%20cells.%20Massive%20tissue%20infiltration%20can%20impede%20treatment%20and%20usually%20leads%20to%20a%20poor%20prognosis.%20Living%20and%20Management%20Your%20veterinarian%20will%20schedule%20follow-up%20examinations%20for%20your%20dog%20to%20monitor%20eosinophil%20count%20(not%20always%20indicative%20of%20tissue%20infiltrates)%20and%20myelosuppression%20(by%20which%20bone%20marrow%20activity%20is%20decreased)%20if%20chemotherapeutic%20drugs%20are%20being%20used.%20Clinical%20signs%20will%20also%20be%20monitored%20along%20with%20any%20physical%20abnormalities%20(e.g.%20loss%20of%20appetite,%20lethargy,%20vomiting,%20and%20diarrhea).%22%7D){kind=logo}
