.%20Chemodectomas%20are%20rare%20in%20cats,%20but%20when%20they%20do%20occur,%20older%20cats%20tend%20to%20be%20more%20predisposed.%20However,%20there%20does%20not%20appear%20to%20be%20a%20gender%20or%20breed%20predilection%20for%20chemodectomas.%20Given%20that%20this%20is%20a%20rare%20condition%20in%20cats,%20aortic%20tumors%20are%20more%20common%20than%20carotid%20tumors,%20but%20metastasis%20to%20other%20organs%20appears%20to%20be%20more%20common%20in%20cats%20when%20it%20does%20occur.%20Symptoms%20and%20Types%20Aortic%20body%20tumors%20occur%20on%20the%20aortic%20artery%20near%20the%20base%20of%20the%20heart.%20They%20are%20rarely%20of%20a%20malignant%20nature;%20they%20will%20grow%20within%20the%20space%20but%20not%20spread%20to%20the%20surrounding%20organs.%20These%20tumors%20become%20a%20health%20concern%20when%20their%20growth%20displaces%20the%20trachea,%20when%20they%20grow%20into%20the%20adjacent%20vessels,%20or%20when%20their%20growth%20places%20pressure%20on%20the%20atria%20or%20vena%20cava,%20impairing%20their%20functionality%20for%20conveying%20blood%20to%20the%20body%20and%20heart.%20Symptoms%20associated%20with%20aortic%20body%20tumors%20include:%20Coughing%20Trouble%20breathing%20Symptoms%20of%20right-sided%20congestive%20heart%20failure%20(CHF)%20Weakness,%20lethargy%20Carotid%20body%20tumors,%20meanwhile,%20occur%20on%20the%20common%20carotid%20artery%20near%20the%20point%20of%20bifurcation%20--%20where%20the%20artery%20splits%20into%20the%20internal%20and%20external%20carotid%20arteries.%20These%20arteries%20carry%20oxygenated%20blood%20to%20the%20head%20and%20neck,%20and%20are%20located%20in%20the%20neck.%20Because%20of%20this%20relation%20to%20the%20major%20arterial%20passages,%20carotid%20body%20tumors%20are%20often%20impossible%20to%20remove.%20In%20the%20majority%20of%20cases,%20these%20tumors%20remain%20slow%20growing%20but%20benign,%20and%20as%20with%20aortic%20tumors,%20they%20become%20a%20health%20issue%20when%20they%20invade%20the%20spaces%20of%20the%20adjacent%20blood%20vessels%20and%20lymphatic%20vessels.%20In%20an%20estimated%2030%20percent%20of%20cases,%20metastasis%20may%20occur%20into%20the%20surrounding%20organs,%20such%20as%20the%20lungs,%20bronchia%20or%20lymph%20nodes,%20or%20further%20into%20the%20liver%20or%20pancreas.%20Symptoms%20associated%20with%20carotid%20body%20tumors%20include:%20Regurgitation%20Vomiting%20Trouble%20with%20eating%20(anorexia)%20Lump%20in%20the%20neck%20Other%20symptoms%20seen%20in%20cats%20affected%20by%20either%20body%20tumor%20type%20include:%20Severe%20hemorrhaging%20due%20to%20tumors%20in%20the%20blood%20vessels%20(can%20lead%20to%20sudden%20death)%20Metastasis%20to%20local%20blood%20vessels%20(up%20to%2050%20percent%20of%20cases%20)%20Organ%20failure%20due%20to%20cancerous%20growths%20(up%20to%2020%20percent%20of%20cases)%20Causes%20It%20is%20suspected%20that%20chronic%20lack%20of%20oxygen%20(hypoxemia)%20may%20be%20associated%20with%20chemodectoma%20development.%20Diagnosis%20After%20performing%20a%20thorough%20physical%20exam%20on%20your%20cat%20and%20taking%20a%20complete%20medical%20history%20from%20you,%20your%20veterinarian%20will%20order%20a%20chemical%20blood%20profile,%20complete%20blood%20count,%20urinalysis,%20and%20electrolyte%20panel.%20The%20results%20of%20these%20tests%20will%20give%20some%20indication%20of%20the%20whether%20the%20cancer%20has%20spread%20in%20the%20body.%20If%20hemorrhaging%20is%20occurring,%20anemia%20may%20be%20present,%20and%20if%20metastasis%20is%20taking%20place,%20higher%20than%20normal%20liver%20enzymes%20may%20be%20present%20in%20the%20bloodstream.%20Chest%20X-rays%20will%20be%20used%20to%20identify%20the%20location%20of%20the%20mass%20and%20to%20check%20for%20cancer%20spread%20to%20the%20lungs%20or%20spine.%20A%20heart%20ultrasound%20will%20also%20be%20performed,%20and%20if%20heart%20impairment%20is%20suspected,%20an%20electrocardiogram%20(EKG)%20may%20be%20used%20to%20measure%20the%20heart%5Cu2019s%20ability%20to%20conduct%20electrical%20signals.%20If%20possible,%20a%20tissue%20sample%20will%20be%20taken%20from%20the%20mass%20for%20biopsy.%20This%20will%20provide%20a%20definite%20diagnosis.%20Treatment%20Unfortunately,%20the%20prognosis%20for%20cats%20with%20either%20of%20these%20types%20of%20tumors%20is%20grim.%20It%20is%20often%20very%20difficult%20to%20remove%20these%20tumors%20because%20of%20their%20placement,%20and%20they%20will%20continue%20to%20grow%20until%20functioning%20of%20the%20surrounding%20vessels%20or%20organs%20is%20impaired%20to%20the%20point%20of%20cardiac%20arrest%20or%20organ%20failure.%20Cancer%20treating%20therapies,%20such%20as%20radiotherapy,%20can%20sometimes%20be%20used%20along%20with%20surgery%20to%20slow%20down%20the%20spread%20of%20these%20cancers.%20Living%20and%20Management%20Your%20cat%20will%20need%20to%20be%20reevaluated%20by%20your%20veterinarian%20at%20least%20every%20three%20months%20for%20chest%20X-rays,%20as%20well%20as%20a%20physical%20exam%20to%20monito
