.%20Personality%20and%20Temperament%20The%20horse%20has%20the%20ability%20to%20adapt%20to%20different%20climates.%20The%20horse%20is%20said%20to%20have%20a%20mild%20personality%20as%20well%20as%20an%20easy-going%20temperament.%20History%20and%20Background%20The%20Kiso%20has%20been%20around%20for%20more%20than%20a%20thousand%20years.%20In%20the%20early%20days,%20it%20was%20used%20as%20a%20means%20of%20transport%20and%20as%20a%20valuable%20helper%20on%20farms.%20There%20are%20reports%20that%20the%20Kiso%20inhabited%20the%20region%20that%20was%20once%20called%20the%20Kiriharanomaki.%20Certainly,%20herds%20of%20Kiso%20horses%20did%20roam%20the%20Kiso%20River%20during%20the%206th%20Century;%20the%20Kiso%20River%20is%20in%20fact%20the%20source%20of%20this%20horse%20breed%5Cu2019s%20name.%20The%20Kiso,%20since%20it%20has%20been%20around%20for%20over%20a%20thousand%20years,%20can%20actually%20be%20considered%20a%20native%20Japanese%20horse.%20Nevertheless,%20Kiso%20horses%20are%20actually%20believed%20to%20be%20the%20descendants%20of%20central%20Asian%20or%20Mongolian%20horses.%20The%20Kiso%20has%20historically%20been%20used%20for%20agricultural%20as%20well%20as%20military%20purposes.%20In%20fact%20it%20is%20said%20that,%20during%20the%2012th%20Century,%20over%2010,000%20soldiers%20used%20the%20Kiso%20as%20their%20war%20mount.%20During%20the%20Edo%20era,%20spanning%20the%20period%201600%20to%201867,%20the%20Kiso%20was%20once%20again%20used%20for%20war%20and%20was%20bred%20actively%20for%20this%20purpose.%20The%20population%20of%20the%20Kiso%20horse%20rose%20to%20more%20than%2010,000%20at%20that%20time.%20In%20the%20mid-19th%20Century%20(this%20was%20the%20time%20of%20the%20Meiji%20era)%20and%20up%20to%201903,%20however,%20Japan%20was%20often%20at%20war%20with%20foreign%20countries.%20The%20Kiso%20horse%20was%20rather%20small%20and%20thus%20proved%20inferior%20to%20the%20much%20bigger%20and%20stronger%20foreign%20horses.%20Japan%20then%20made%20attempts%20to%20improve%20the%20Kiso;%20it%20was%20crossed%20with%20bigger%20and%20stronger%20breeds.%20When%20World%20War%20II%20came,%20however,%20efforts%20to%20improve%20the%20size%20of%20the%20Kiso%20ceased.%20Machines%20and%20not%20horses%20were%20used%20for%20transporting%20troops%20and%20supplies.%20Even%20so,%20the%20cross-breeding%20efforts%20have%20already%20succeeded%20in%20depleting%20the%20breed.%20Today,%20only%20around%2070%20purebred%20Kiso%20horses%20remain.%22%7D){kind=spacer}
