%20and%20not%20dermatomyositis%20as%20previously%20reported.%20Studies%20suggest%20that%20dermatomyositis%20is%20inherited%20in%20an%20autosomal%20dominant%20manner%20(the%20chromosome%20is%20inherited%20from%20both%20parents),%20with%20variable%20expression.%20Skin%20lesions%20typically%20develop%20before%20six%20months%20of%20age,%20and%20may%20develop%20as%20early%20as%20seven%20weeks.%20The%20full%20extent%20of%20lesions%20usually%20is%20present%20by%20one%20year%20of%20age,%20with%20lessening%20afflictions%20thereafter.%20Adult-onset%20dermatomyositis%20can%20occur,%20but%20it%20is%20rare.%20Symptoms%20and%20Types%20Signs%20of%20dermatomyositis%20can%20vary%20from%20subtle%20skin%20lesions%20and%20inflammation%20of%20muscles,%20to%20severe%20skin%20lesions%20and%20a%20generalized%20decrease%20in%20muscle%20mass%20(known%20as%20muscle%20atrophy),%20with%20an%20enlarged%20esophagus%20(the%20tube%20running%20from%20the%20throat%20to%20the%20stomach).%20Skin%20lesions%20around%20the%20eyes,%20lips,%20face,%20and%20inner%20surface%20of%20the%20prick%20ears%20will%20vary%20in%20intensity;%20the%20entire%20face%20may%20be%20involved.%20The%20tip%20of%20the%20tail%20and%20bony%20prominences%20can%20also%20be%20affected.%20Lesions%20may%20increase%20and%20decrease%20over%20time.%20They%20are%20characterized%20by%20variable%20degrees%20of%20crusted%20areas,%20with%20loss%20of%20the%20top%20surface%20of%20the%20skin%20(they%20are%20referred%20to%20as%20erosions%20or%20ulcers,%20based%20on%20the%20depth%20of%20tissue%20loss)%20and%20alopecia.%20Reddening%20of%20the%20skin%20(erythema),%20and%20accumulations%20of%20surface%20skin%20cells,%20such%20as%20seen%20in%20dandruff,%20or%20scaling%20skin,%20may%20be%20manifestations%20of%20this%20disease.%20The%20initial%20skin%20lesions%20may%20leave%20scars%20on%20the%20skin.%20More%20severely%20affected%20dogs%20may%20have%20difficulty%20eating,%20drinking,%20and%20swallowing.%20Symptoms%20of%20dermatomyositis%20are%20usually%20seen%20in%20affected%20dogs%20before%20they%20are%20six%20months%20of%20age.%20Several%20litter-mates%20may%20be%20affected,%20but%20the%20severity%20of%20the%20disease%20often%20varies%20significantly%20among%20dogs%20that%20are%20affected%20by%20this%20disease.%20Foot-pad%20ulcers%20and%20ulcers%20in%20the%20mouth%20as%20well%20as%20nail%20abnormalities%20or%20loss%20may%20occur,%20along%20with%20inflammation%20of%20the%20muscles.%20Signs%20may%20be%20absent,%20or%20they%20may%20vary%20from%20a%20subtle%20decrease%20in%20the%20mass%20of%20the%20muscles%20extending%20from%20the%20top%20and%20side%20of%20the%20head,%20behind%20the%20eye,%20to%20the%20lower%20jaw,%20or%20they%20may%20be%20too%20generalized,%20with%20loss%20of%20muscle%20mass%20at%20equal%20points%20of%20the%20body.%20A%20stiff%20gait%20may%20also%20be%20present.%20There%20will%20often%20be%20a%20decrease%20in%20muscle%20mass%20of%20the%20muscles%20extending%20from%20the%20bone%20below%20the%20eye%20to%20the%20lower%20jaw%20muscle%20that%20acts%20to%20close%20the%20jaw,%20and%20in%20the%20muscles%20extending%20from%20the%20top%20and%20side%20of%20the%20head%20and%20behind%20the%20eye,%20to%20the%20lower%20jaw%20muscles%20that%20act%20to%20close%20the%20jaw.%20Dogs%20that%20have%20been%20diagnosed%20with%20an%20enlarged%20esophagus%20may%20come%20down%20with%20pneumonia.%20Conditions%20that%20can%20lead%20to%20pneumonia%20will%20need%20to%20be%20avoided.%20Causes%20Causes%20for%20dermatomyositis%20can%20usually%20be%20traced%20to%20a%20hereditary%20source,%20but%20can%20also%20be%20sourced%20to%20an%20immune-mediated%20disease,%20or%20to%20infectious%20agents.%20Treatment%20Most%20dogs%20can%20be%20treated%20as%20outpatients,%20but%20dogs%20with%20severe%20inflammation%20of%20the%20muscles,%20and%20an%20enlarged%20esophagus,%20may%20need%20to%20be%20hospitalized%20for%20supportive%20care.%20If%20the%20condition%20is%20so%20severe%20that%20treatment%20will%20be%20ineffectual,%20euthanasia%20may%20be%20indicated%20and%20recommended%20by%20your%20veterinarian.%20Living%20and%20Management%20To%20protect%20your%20pet%5Cu2019s%20skin%20from%20further%20irritation%20or%20damage%20you%20will%20need%20to%20avoid%20activities%20that%20may%20traumatize%20the%20skin.%20Keep%20your%20pet%20indoors%20during%20the%20day%20to%20avoid%20exposure%20to%20intense%20sunlight,%20since%20ultraviolet-light%20exposure%20may%20worsen%20skin%20lesions.%20You%20may%20need%20to%20change%20your%20pet%5Cu2019s%20diet%20if%20it%20has%20an%20enlarged%20esophagus,%20or%20has%20difficulty%20eating%20and%5C/or%20swallowing.%20Your%20veterinarian%20may%20recommend%20hypoallergenic%20shampoos%20and%20treatment%20for%20secondary%20bacterial%20skin%20infections.%20Vitamin%20E,%20essential%20fatty-acid%20supplements,%20steroids%20to%20decrease%20inflammation,%20and%20a%20medication%20to%20improve%20blood%20flow%20may%20also%20be%20prescribed.%20Infected%20animals%20should%20not%20be%20bred%20out,%20and%20it%20is%20strongly%
